3 months! (yesterday)

Three months have gone by in a flash!  She has changed so much already!

In case you forgot, this is what she looked like day 1 at the hospital.  Already an alert little girl.
But now she is really getting to be interested in what is going on around her. (I LOVE her cloth diaper bubble bum.)

She is just recently starting to open her hands a lot to grab for and bat at toys.  She LOVES her jungle play mat.  The lights really get her excited too.
Working on her sitting up skills.  Not quite there but definitely improving every day.
Lovin' on the Valentines teddy bear that Daddy got for her.  She has recently really discovered her ability to put things into her mouth.

Happy Valentines Day!

I told Ken I wasn't planning or expecting anything for Valentines Day, but it is a good excuse to dress up the babe in a cute outfit.

Here are a few other pictures that I had been meaning to post as well.

A friend of mine snapped this picture at her house when we went over to help her pack and clean since they were moving to San Diego.  I ended up spending most of the time just chatting with her and nursing Scarlet.  I did at least pack a couple of boxes of her movies.
She gave us some of her daughter's old clothes since they were moving and I thought this outfit was stinking cute even if it looks like a 4th of July outfit.

Figuring out how to take pictures of us together with the help of our mirror in the entry way.

On my birthday we woke up to a broken heater.  Brrr. Fortunately, the repair man was able to come within 2 hours and it was a pretty easy fix AND it was under warranty.  Yeah!  Happy Birthday to me!

We stayed nice and cozy together while we waited.
p.s. These are the best blankets ever!  From Costco. $13.  Booya.

She actually sits up in the Bumbo really well now and hardly ever falls over!  She is getting so strong!

Go check on the baby

Lately I have had way too many moments when I have felt like the Holy Spirit has prompted me to do something or say something and I have ignored it (For example when I propped Scarlet on the couch and had the thought to ask Ken to watch her while I did something else for a minute, but I didn't say anything, and then she fell face first into a pillow.  Fortunately within a few seconds he did notice, but I wouldn't have felt like such a dinglebat if I had just told him to watch her. p.s. I came back soon enough that had he not noticed I am certain there would have been no lasting damage. Or the time when I asked him to go to Home Depot to buy a new air filter on his way home from work and I felt like I should send him a picture of the old one, but didn't, and he bought the wrong one.)  If I had just listened and obeyed that little prompting life would have been just a tiny bit better, or easier, or more convenient, nothing dramatic, just easier.  Well, in the Sunday School class that I teach we have been having an ongoing discussion about seeing Heavenly Father's hand in our life.  This past week I decided I would try super hard to just act on any little thoughts that I had.  One night I woke up at about 2:00am to use the bathroom (I thought I would be done with the middle of the night potty breaks after giving birth but they have not totally stopped.)  As I was finishing up I had the thought, "Go check on the baby."  I have also been trying to fight the first-time-mom paranoia and not check on her so much so there was a slight hesitation, but fortunately, I decided to just do it.  I sort of asked the Spirit, "Do I need light?" and the answer was, "Yes" (which seems pretty obvious if you are going to go check on a child but in my half stupor I needed to ask the question.)  So I went out and turned on the hall light and then went in to check on her.  As I approached her crib I could see that the blanket was only half way on her body so I decided to pull it up on her.  As I pulled up the blanket she startled and flailed her arms.  When she flailed her arms I noticed that her sleeves were covering her little hands.  Since she is a thumb sucker (see previous post for a picture) I knew that would be a problem if she needed to self-sooth later that night/morning.  I was able to gently roll up her sleeves without disturbing her too much and she was able to sleep until sometime after 7:00am.  I am fairly certain that had I not rolled up her sleeves she would have woken up much earlier, mad that she couldn't find her thumb and then wanting to eat.  It was definitely a little tender mercy from the Lord for both of us.

One of my favorite scriptures that relates to this topic is found in the Book of Mormon, when Lehi and his family are on their journey from Jerusalem to the new promised land.  They received the Liahona (compass/ball) to guide them and Nephi makes this remark, "And we did follow the directions of the ball (Liahona), which led us in the more fertile parts of the wilderness." 1 Nephi 16:16. The journey was difficult and they had to make the journey regardless, but by following the Liahona they went through the best parts of the wilderness, which made their journey just a little bit easier, just a little bit happier.  When we have the gift of the Holy Spirit to be our companion, AND we act on the promptings that he gives us, our journey of life, which can be very difficult, is just a little bit easier, a little bit happier.  I had another experience today at church with my Sunday School class, that I won't go into here, but it was obvious to me that it was a tender mercy and an answered prayer, and I felt like I was on cloud nine because of the great joy that I felt.  To me, feeling that intense, true joy that comes from following those promptings is one of the absolute greatest things about living the gospel of Jesus Christ and looking for God's hand in my life.  I know He is there.

Dear Diary...

Dear Diary... Sometimes I forget about you.  Ok, it actually hasn't been that long but I was just looking at pictures and realized I had a bunch that I wanted to post but didn't yet so it's going to be another random picture posting.

Not great photo quality but when her hair is wet it is super curly.  Too bad it straightens out when it is dry, even if we don't comb it out.  The other day after her bath Ken was combing her hair and doing different hairstyles like a faux hawk or all straight forward. I was starting to get impatient and he said, "hey, this is my only chance to play dolls!"

I just love her cute smile! I always get excited when I can actually capture it on camera.

I have to give a little shout out to my sister Jenn for teaching me the ways of Baby Wise.  At just 2 months Scarlet already sleeps through the night really well.  She usually goes down around 9:00pm and sleeps until sometime between 7am-8am.  The fact that she has found her thumb has really helped a lot too.  She is able to soothe herself back to sleep if she is startled at all.  I am loving the good sleep!

Some people have asked me if she ever cries.  Yep.  She does.

But most of the time she is just our little angel.

Well, I was going to post more but I started this in the morning and then she woke up before I could finish.  Now it is evening and I know I won't be able to do any more later so I will just finish for now and do more again soon... I hope.

Fashion Show

Whenever I come home with new clothes either for me or for Ken I always insist on having a fashion show.  Ken is patient enough to check out my new clothes when I put them on and excitedly show him and he only grumbles a little bit when I make him try on what I bought for him to show me.  (I do have to see it on him though since I am just guessing when I buy stuff for him.)  Yesterday he sent me a text saying that he had bought something for Scarlet, which besides forking over lots of money for everything we bought before she was born, this was a first for him.  When he got home he (almost excitedly) said, "This will be Scarlet's first fashion show for Daddy!"  Uh-oh, Daddy is gonna be a pushover for Scarlet's shopping habit...

I have to admit the jacket is pretty dang cute, even if she looks kind of boyish in it right now.  Fortunately, he bought a 12 months size so it should fit her next football season and she may have longer hair then, or I will just put a bow in it.
I went to the store early this morning while she was still sleeping.  As I was heading home I sent him a text to see if she was awake yet.  He sent me this picture.  I guess she was happy enough to be with him since she knows he buys her cute clothes.

Basketball Game and then some

We went a local high school girls basketball game to watch our old neighbors play.  They are twins and seniors this year.  Even for just a high school game it was super loud so I was grateful we had the headphones.  I loved how they squished her face too. She didn't seem to mind too much.

And thanks to the headphones and a baby bjorn she even got to sleep for quite awhile.  I ALWAYS take the baby bjorn with me now that she doesn't sleep very well in her car seat.  Today she fell asleep in it while we were at a postal annex sending packages.  And she slept in it some more while we were at Target.

And then we came home and I transferred her to the swing and she actually stayed asleep.  Hooray!  That was a lot of in and out of the car seat.  (Sorry the picture is blurry but the swing was in motion.)

Just had to post this one because she is so dang cute and I was proud of myself for actually capturing a smile.  She is starting to be very social and I can almost always coax a smile out of her after she eats.  We like to have conversations too.  She is very interested in our mouths and is already trying to figure it out.  Her cooing is so adorable.  It just melts my heart every time!

I am amazed at how well she is able to pick up her head and upper body already.  She's going to be mobile before I know it!

But she is strong because she is getting short spurts of practice holding up her body and head while sitting in the Bumbo.  Love the gangster look!

In her favorite PJs just staring at dad.  She looks like a little fruity tuiti!

Randomness

Randomness in chronological order....

Scarlet's first church outfit.  She wore it on the Sunday before Christmas so I guess that makes it her Christmas dress.  It is a stinking cute dress but not very functional for a newborn.  Oh well.

Scarlet's Christmas PJs from my mom's friend Keliah.  Unfortunately, she had a blowout Christmas morning so this was a hurried picture of her in the PJs before we had to change her.

I don't have very many pictures of me with Scarlet.  This was at the Black Bear Diner where we met up with Bri and Nic for breakfast the Saturday after Christmas.  The lady sitting in the booth opposite of our table could not stop staring!  haha.  It was really fun to see Bri and Nic again.  Maybe someday we will get to visit them in New York!

Starting to get mad because the toy she was trying to suck on wasn't staying in her mouth.

Thank you Uncle Keith and Aunt Natalie for the cute cougars onesie!  She actually wore this on the day that the Ducks had their bowl game.  It was the best I could do.  She is wearing a yellow flower in her hair at least.

We've started using the Bumbo to help her build muscle strength for sitting up on her own.  (I love the double chin!)

We have to keep a close eye on her though because she gets a little bit tipsy sometimes.

I am not sure if this video will play.  I may need one of my more tech saavy sisters to tell me how to embed a video on the blog. It is just a video of Ken making his helicopter sound and Scarlet's reaction to it.  Really short and not great quality.  Hope it works.
